NUMBER: ICA3-CT-2002-50002
Start Date: 01/10/2002 End Date: 30/11/2003
SUMMARY: (22/04/2003)

From CORDIS:

Objective: Water has become a priority issue for Mediterranean countries and will gain in important as water scarcity becomes more pressing. Water scarcity could be alleviated through the mobilisation of non-conventional water resources such as wastewater reuse. In this context, the present proposal pretends to consolidate a working group in the Mediterranean basin, highly experienced within this field of research in order to foster the: (1) Technological transfer from North to South of the Mediterranean basin; (2) Establishment of works for European and Mediterranean guidelines on the subject; (3) Exchange of technical staff; (4) Training actions and (5) Organisation of seminars and related events. In order to achieve these goals a Network on wastewater reuse would be created, fostering the co-operation among European and Mediterranean experts on this field.

The main objective of the project is to propose efficient alternative solutions and to give a solution to the problems of water scarcity on the Mediterranean basin by harmonising the existing standards on wastewater reuse in the Mediterranean countries in order to contribute to the elaboration of effective legislation on water reuse and of a best practices manual on wastewater reuse.
The present proposal will permit to carry out a valorisation of the new strategy of integrated resources management for water resources through a strong commitment in relation with hygienic regulations and environmental protection. In this context, and being aware that it is essential to promote better integrated strategies and water management policies and to improve the exchange of knowledge in the field of water reuse among European and Mediterranean countries, the proposer envisages to carry out several actions.
